Heat recovery from the ammonia condenser at the meat factory in Finland has achieved an 87% reduction in CO2 emissions, with a typical payback period of less than 1.5 years. The heat pump recovers 1.1 MW of heat by condenser cooling and generates 1.4 MW of heat with a COP of 4.67.
The 75°C hot water from the heat pump is used for space heating and other purposes at no additional cost, whereas previously it was generated using a hot water generator. The 1.4 MW heat pump has helped save £130K and 2337 tonnes of CO2 emissions every year.
